Davis Hoping Do Something That's Never Been Done at World Series

16-Year-Old Gearing Up for Busy Nine Days in New Smyrna

For 48 years racers have been coming to Florida's fast half-mile oval that sits just a few miles south of the World Center of Racing in Daytona Beach.  The 49th year for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway will be just the ninth time the Pro Late Models will be in competition.  It's a division that has been extremely competitive, seeing eight different champions in eight years.  This year, 16-year-old Spencer Davis is looking to do something that’s never been done before by becoming the first repeat champion in that division.

even more of an accomplishment to go back to back. 

I think we have the team, the equipment and the driver

to do it.  It's definitely going to be harder.  There's a lot

of good competition.  It'll mean a lot to be the first

back to back Pro Late Model champion."

Repeating as champion will obviously be a tough task

for the young Dawsonville, Georgia driver.  18 cars are

on the pre-entry list as of February 9th, and New Smyrna is a track that isn't necessarily known for being kind to equipment.

"You never know what could happen at Speedweeks in 35 laps with all those cars," he said.  "You could get caught up in a wreck or anything like that that could hurt your chances.  There's a bunch of factors in there that could keep from repeating, but you never know.  It's just racing."

In addition to that, Davis will be the busiest person in New Smyrna Beach.  Not only is he running every race in his Pro Late Model, but he's also running every single Tour-Type Modified race in the Hillbilly Racing No. 79 and every Super Late Model show in the Spencer Davis Racing No. 129 as well.  Davis did the exact same thing last year at the World Series.

"Having to race three cars in three nights starts to get a little tiring," he said.  "But I think I'm a bit more conditioned to do it this year.  It's definitely mentally and physically abusive on your body.”

Davis said that he feels better prepared for the toughest week of his year this go-round compared to last year.  Part of that has to do with knowing exactly what to expect.

"Last year I wasn't really prepared for it," he said.  "We went up there at the last minute and got the Modified ride from Hillbilly Racing."

While Davis' offseason is short since he's almost always racing, he's found ways to stay in shape so that he'll be as ready as anyone to go win a championship, or championships, at New Smyrna.

"I work out and also work in the shop a lot," Davis said.  "That helps with body building because you're always lifting heavy stuff.  I try to prepare for it in the week leading up with how I eat.  I try to eat super healthy and drink plenty of water.  That way everything gets flushed out of my system.  No sodas.  Strictly water and Gatorade and healthy things."

In addition to winning a second straight Pro Late Model World Series championship, Davis just wants to accomplish two other goals.  If he can cross these two goals off the checklist then he can head back north to Dawsonville happy.

"Getting a win in the Super Late Model or the Modified would just be awesome," he said.  "That's our goal.  But I think we'll be one of the cars to beat in every division this year."

The 49th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing begins on February 13 and continues until February 21.  Major Tour-Type Modified events during the week include the John Blewett III Memorial 76 on Wednesday, February 18 and the Richie Evans Memorial 100 on Friday, February 20.
