Davis Records Strong Seventh-Place Finish in Return to South Boston
15-Year-Old Driver Making Progress in Repeat Visits to NWSMT Tracks
Fifteen-year-old Spencer Davis continues to learn and make progress in his rookie season on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.  The Dawsonville, Georgia driver recorded another strong showing on Saturday night at South Boston Speedway (VA) by qualifying sixth and crossing under the checkered flag in the seventh position at the conclusion of the NWSMT South Boston 150.

After starting from the sixth position, Davis struggled
to find speed on the outside of the .4-mile Virginia
oval.  He slipped out of the top-10 in the early stages
before charging back to eighth just before coming
down pit road to change a right rear tire on lap 94.

A good pit stop from the Hillbilly Racing Team sent
the No. 79 21 Means 21 Pontiac back onto the
track into the sixth spot.  Davis fought an ill-handling
racecar while hanging on to finish seventh and
record the second-best NWSMT finish of his young
career

“The car was just too loose on the top there at the beginning,” said Davis.  “We fell back to 11th or 12th and I worked my way back up to eighth and the guys gave me an awesome pit stop.  They gave me a good spot and that was awesome on their part.  The car just wouldn’t go on the high side and I ended up falling back there a little bit at the end.”

Saturday night’s start at South Boston was Davis’ second in a Tour-Type Modified.  On his way to a strong finish in his repeat visit to the track, he felt as though he was able to apply a lot that he learned in his previous visit in April.

“It definitely helps going back to these tracks for a second time,” Davis said.  “It gives me a better idea of what this type of car is going to do on these tracks as track conditions change.  Getting more seat time in the Modified helps a lot, too.  We’ve definitely come a long ways since the beginning of the year.”

Davis now looks forward to Southern National Motorsports Park (NC), the host of next Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150.  He holds a four-point advantage over his two nearest competitors in the NWSMT Rookie of the Year standings heading into the weekend.

“We had a pretty decent run at Southern National in March,” said Davis.  “We just had a bad tire that spoiled our finish.  The momentum we have has been real awesome the last couple of weeks.  We’ve been running really well.  I’m definitely looking forward to this weekend at Southern National because I like that track a lot.  It seemed to always be one of my better tracks that we went to with a Late Model.  I’m looking forward to getting back there with the Modified.”

Davis will also be in action in a full-fendered Super Late Model on Friday when he competes in the Southern Super Series 125 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
