Davis Dodges Last Lap Wreck on Way to Sixth-Place Finish at Caraway
Georgia Driver Inches Closer to 2014 NWSMT Rookie of the Year Honors
Spencer Davis found a four-leaf clover in his fire suit on Saturday night at Caraway Speedway (NC).

For what seemed like the first time this season, the 15-year-old driver had lady luck on his side when he dodged a multi-car accident on the final lap and went on to cross under the checkered flag with a sixth-place finish in the Prestoria Farms 150, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour’s penultimate event of the 2014 season.

“We finally got lucky for a change,” said Davis of
Dawsonville, Georgia.  “This is the first time all year.
We had that bad drought here where we had bad
luck and just couldn’t catch a break.

“We came in the corner and from what I could see
cars were all the way at the top and all the way at the
bottom.  It was one of those old fashioned deals
where everyone all the way back to eighth was going
for the win because they all have a shot.  It all broke
loose all at once.”

As a result of his sixth-place finish on Saturday night, Davis earned valuable points in the tight battle for 2014 NWMST Rookie of the Year honors.  He entered the night two points ahead of his closest competitor in the rookie standings and finished the race with the best finish among rookies, putting him in a good position entering Thursday’s season finale at Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC).

“We had a green-white-checkered and it was one of those deals where I was like, ‘man, one rookie is right in front of me’ and unless we wrecked and the caution came out we weren’t going to finish worse than second (among rookies),” said Davis.   “Luck came our way tonight.  They all scrambled and somehow in the middle of being three-wide we came out on the bottom and finished sixth.”

Throughout the day on Saturday, Davis and the No. 79 Hillbilly Racing team fought the handling on the 21 Means 21 Modified.  The Dawsonville, Georgia driver battled loose conditions in qualifying before having to fight tight conditions during the 150-lap feature event.

“We started the race tight in the center and lost a lot of track position,” said Davis.  “We got tangled up there with Brian Loftin one time.  We just made a bunch of pit stops every chance we had without losing a lap and we made the car a little bit better throughout the race.”

Next up for Davis will be the final NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event of the 2014 season on Thursday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC).  He enters the event at the top of the rookie standings and in a tight battle for the seventh through 11th spots in the overall driver standings.

“I’m excited to get to Charlotte,” said Davis.  “We have a lot on the line and I’m really looking forward to ending the season on a solid note with the Hillbilly Team.”
