Davis Impressive in Return Trip to Thompson for NWMT World Series
Georgia Driver Pumped Up About Future with Hillbilly Racing
When 15-year-old Spencer Davis took the green flag in the Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (CT) Sunday afternoon, he knew the competition would be stiff.  Racing against the best of the best in NASCAR Modified racing, Davis battled within the top-10 of the 36-car field for the majority of the race before using a great restart on a green-white-checkered finish to cross under the checkered flag in the seventh position.

The seventh-place finish is a career best NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour finish for the Dawsonville, Georgia driver, who has made four starts with the
series in 2014.  He also competed in a NWMT event
at New Hampshrie Motor Speedway, Waterford
Speedbowl (CT) and the Budweiser 150
at Thompson earlier this year.

“The first race was all about mastering the learning
curve.  This time we raced a bunch of good drivers –
Justin Bonsignore, Ronnie Silk, Eric Goodale and
Ted Christopher – throughout the whole day," said
Davis. "There were 36 cars here and we qualified in
the top half of the field.  But man, the competition is
so stiff here.  It’s really hard to learn when you’re a rookie who
hadn’t even driven a Modified until this year, but I definitely got a better grasp on the track this time.”

Davis started from the 15th position on the 36-car grid after a strong qualifying run on Saturday afternoon and quickly worked his way towards the top-10.  The team elected to stay out during a lap 70 caution while a number of the leaders pitted for tires.  He would come in the pits with roughly 40 laps to go and make a strong charge back towards the top-10 in the closing laps.

“We were just too loose and didn’t want to pit too early.  We just rode around with the No. 79 Coors Light 21 Means 21 Modified there for a little bit and stayed out of trouble.  The car was good there at the end once we made our pit stop.  We started back on the outside and got up there really quick.  We found some luck on the last couple restarts and on the green-white-checkered we got the top and gained a bunch of positions when the bottom stuffed up.

“At the end of the day finishing top-10 in two of my four Northern Tour starts, especially with a team like this, is awesome.”

Davis will now sit down with car owner and crew chief David Hill to discuss what is in store for the future.  The dynamic-duo has come a long way over the course of the 2014 season and the relationship they have built has both of them excited for 2015.

“We know for sure we’re going to be together next year,” said Davis.  “The relationship with me and Mr. David (Hill) is really strong.  We won the Rookie of the Year this year in the Southern stuff.  We know we can run really good everywhere we go.  We feel like, even with just one year in a Modified, that we’re a championship winning team.”

Spencer Davis is scheduled to return to racing action on the weekend of October 31-November 1.  At this time, it is still undecided on whether he’ll be behind the wheel of a Pro Late Model at the All-American 400 at Fairground Nashville Speedway (TN) or back behind the wheel of the No. 79 Hillbilly Modified at the North-South Shootout at Caraway Speedway (NC).
