Davis Runs a Modified at the Historic Bowman Gray for the First Time
Georgia 15-year-old In Awe of the History of the Quarter-Mile Track
When young drivers walk into Bowman Gray Stadium (NC) they get a sensation they are about to join the ranks of history.  For more than 60 years, the toughest and the bravest drivers have made laps around the quarter-mile stadium search for glory and honor.  For Spencer Davis, there was only honor after his first visit to Bowman Gray Stadium in a Modified.  Finishes of 13th and 18th in the twin 25-lap Modified events left him wanting the glory in what was a test session for the August NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race.

"The Stadium was awesome," said Davis.  "I wish we could have had some better finishes to show for our run. We came from 26th to 13th in the first one and really got a taste of beating and banging.  Being in the right lane on the restarts was big as well.  It was only a 25-lap race so I knew it would be quick, but we were pleased with the performance."

Race two was a different story.  After having some laps on the track and getting a chance to make adjustments to the Hillbilly Racing No. 79 ride, Davis started the second race with bigger goals and an eye on a top 10 finish.

"We started working our way forward and then the rear end went bad," said Davis.  "The car also got real tight, so we could not make any more progress forward."

There is a good chance that Davis will return to the Stadium at least one more time before the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race in August. Maybe the return trip will bring more glory than honor after the first one.  Getting laps at Bowman Gray can gratefully help his advantage as he chases the Southern Tour's Rookie of the Year title.

The next race for Spencer Davis will be the Bullring Bash 100 at Lee USA Speedway (NH) on Sunday May 11.  The Bullring Bash 100 is the first of the Tri-Track Open Modified events that also includes the SBM 125 at Star Speedway (NH) on June 14 and the Modified Madness at Seekonk on July 23.
