Davis Starts Off 2014 With Fourth at Red-Eye 100
Some drivers have an off season.  Then there is Spencer Davis.

After running well over 60 Late Model races in 2013, the 15-year-old driver from Dawsonville, Georgia took only three weeks off before jumping back in a Super Late Model on January 4th at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) for the Red-Eye 100.

When the dust cleared and the night settled Davis was fourth in the final rundown in a field of 23 cars, which is a great way to start the 2014 campaign.

"If you start on the bottom here sometimes it can be a real challenge," said Davis.  "Once we lost a bit on the start of the race and then got going, we were half a track behind.  I think we all figured things would not have been that clean to start the race."

Davis started ninth in the race and was one of many in disbelief that the first 72 laps were run without a caution flag.  Davis charged as hard as he could to catch the leaders, but also keeping tire conservations on his mind for a late sprint to the finish when a caution finally did fall.

"We got the caution we needed and we got to fourth at one point, but we just couldn't get it all together," added Davis.  "I am real happy with the way it went.  We finished well here last year, but tonight there were a lot of good cars in the mix and fourth is good."

Davis had already been in Daytona the week before the Red-Eye 100 for some go-kart action.  He had some mixed results, but did take the pole in one event, besting a field of 60.

As far as Late Models go Davis will be back at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) in two weeks for the Pete Orr / Orange Blossom Special 100.  This race will be run on Saturday, January 18th and is the second leg of the Florida Triple Crown.
