Pit Road Incident Ends Davis’ Night Early in NWMT Debut at Waterford
Georgia Driver Ready to Enjoy Week Off Before Returning to NWSMT Action
Spencer Davis’ impressive NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour debut at Waterford Speedbowl (CT) came to an abrupt halt on Saturday night following an incident on pit road during the middle stages of the event.  Davis, who qualified 17th in his first career start at Waterford Speedbowl, retired  from the event with significant suspension damage on lap 70 and would end up finishing 26th in his NWMT debut.

Prior to the incident on pit road, Davis had made steady movement towards the front in his Hillbilly Racing No. 79.  The Dawsonville, Georgia driver was running in the 12th position when the team made the decision to come down pit road under caution to make adjustments.

After the pit stop, Davis attempted to make his way
down the make-shift pit road behind the backstretch
of the Connecticut shoreline oval.  As he did so,
another driver pulled out in front of him forcing Davis
to wheel hop the car and make contact with the
outside barrier on pit road.

The damage from the contact would end up being
significant enough to spoil the 15-year-old’s NWMT
debut.

“We came through pit road and we were the first car
that was able to get into our pit stall,” said Davis.

"We came in, pitted and came out.  I got next to Rowan Pennink and we were about even and he came on out of his pit stall with no warning.  Before I could even react we got together and jumped his tire.  I was doing all I could to start but ended up going into the barriers.”

Despite the obvious frustrations from having a good run come to a sudden end, Davis remained pleased with the team’s efforts on Saturday night.

“The car was great,” said Davis.  “I really wish we could have been around at the end.  I felt like we were making steady progress and could have brought home a good finish.  We had a good outing despite what happened and that was a confidence booster for sure."

Something unheard of for Davis, he will now take a week off to prepare for a July 4 weekend doubleheader at Caraway Speedway (NC) with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified tour and KOMA Unwind Modified Madness Series at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC).

“We’re going to take the week off,” said Davis on his plans for this upcoming weekend.  “We’ve been planning it for a while.  We’re going to regroup and get ready for this next southern race at Caraway.  We’re going to get everything primed up for the doubleheader down at Caraway (WSMT) and Hickory (KOMA) to see if we can’t walk out of there with some good finishes.”

Although the ambitious 15-year-old says that he will be “taking the week off," there is a very good chance he ends up at a racetrack and possibly even racing something before the weekend is over.

“I’m thinking about going to the go-kart track with Mr. David (Hill) and helping out his son and maybe racing.  It’s definitely going to feel weird not being with the Modified or even the Late Model at a race track, but everybody needs a week or two off every now and then.”
