Spencer Davis Plans North-South Modified Double This Week

Electrical Issues End Georgia Driver's Strong Run in Prestigious SLM Race

Spencer Davis of Dawsonville, Georgia will make his third career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour start on Wednesday afternoon when he travels to Connecticut's Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park for the Budwieser King of Beers 150.  Davis has previous NWMT starts at Waterford Speedbowl (CT) and New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NH).  He hopes to be able to continue the strong history of success the Hillbilly Racing Team has experienced at Thompson.

“I'm excited to go to Thompson,” said the 15-year-old

Georgia racer.  “From what I understand, it's a big,

high-banked 5/8-mile track with a lot of speed.  The

Hillbilly team has always run really strong when they've

run there and they've got a couple wins.  I'm just really

stoked to go up there and make my third Northern

start for them.  I can't wait to get up there and try to

get them another Tour win.”

Davis has never raced at the 5/8-mile high-banked

oval, but he has been doing his homework and has

received advice from his crew chief David Hill, as well as former NWMT winner and longtime Modified racer Chris Kopec.

“I've also been doing my homework, watching videos of past races, studying up on the track and asking those guys a lot of questions,” said Davis.  “They know a ton about that track.  Plus I've been hearing about Woody Pitkat and also Daniel Hemric in the last few years about how they've run well the past few times they've been there.  It's been one of their strongest tracks.”

Following the race on Wednesday night, Davis will make his way back to the southern part of the country to compete in the KOMA Unwind Modified Madness Series event at Anderson Motor Speedway (SC) on Friday, August 15.  Davis is excited to return to Anderson, a track which he has previous experience on, and hopes to be able to come away with his first win in a Tour-Type Modified.

“Luckily I've been there before, which will help,” said Davis.  “It's going to be a new track for a lot of those guys.  It's like at Coastal Plains, a track nobody had been to before, it really leveled the playing field and brought the driver out in everybody.  From what I understand, they had a SMART race way long ago, but not many of these guys have been on that track yet so everyone's on a level plane going into Friday night's race.”

On Saturday, Davis had a strong run going in the prestigious World Crown 300 at Gresham Motorsports Park (GA) before his car failed to re-fire after a lap 220 pit stop.  The 15-year-old racer, who is making just a handful of Super Late Model starts in 2014, was forced to bring his No. 129 behind the wall and settle for a 12th-place finish in what turned out to be a wild event.

“We had a good car at the end,” said Davis.  “We came in and were going to take our last set of tires and the car wouldn’t crank.  It sucks because the guys put in so much effort this weekend.  We worked so hard

fighting an ill-handling car all weekend.  We finally got it decent and more bad luck hit us.  I think we’ve got something to contend with the next time we race this car.”
