Spencer Davis Records Career-Best Modified Finishes Over the Weekend

15-Year-Old Finishes Third at Bowman Gray, Second at Coastal Plains

Throughout the 2014 campaign, Modified rookie Spencer Davis and the No. 79 Hillbilly Racing Team have continously shown improvement every time they have shown up to the race track.  That trend continued this past weekend when Davis recorded his first career podium finish in a Modified with a third-place finish at Bowman Gray Stadium (NC) on Saturday .  The next day, on Sunday afternoon, Davis showed improvement once again by finishing in the runner-up position in the KOMA Unwind Modified Madness Series event at Coastal Plains Speedway (NC).

first feature, Davis was able to start out front

and stay near the front during the second

feature.

More importantly than the finish, Davis and the

Hillbilly Racing Team continue to get better at

Bowman Gray Stadium, a track they will visit

with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified 

Tour later in the year.

“We’ve been going there to make laps and we’ve been getting a lot better every week we go," Davis said.  "We had the opportunity to start closer up front and if it weren’t for us having to abuse the right rear tire during the first race, we would have had a shot.  Third place is definitely heading in the right direction.”

After not getting a lot of sleep on Saturday night, Davis and the team headed to Coastal Plains Speedway on Sunday.  A wiring issue during the opening practice session forced them to miss the second practice session, but the team was able to fix the problem and gave Davis a car good enough to capture his first career pole in a Modified.

“You know, we started the day at Coastal Plains a little bit tired," said Davis.  "We started practice, made about seven laps and the car sputtered coming down the back straightaway and shut off.  We found out that it was a wiring issue with the ignition box.  We got that fixed and went out to qualify.  We qualified on the pole by a whole tenth over Burt (Myers), which was really cool being my first pole in a Modified and being able to get it by a whole tenth over the best of the best racing in the South."

When the green flag waved, Jeremy Mayfield jumped out to an early lead over Davis but the 15-year-old was able to keep the former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver in his sights.  A flaweless green flag pit stop later in the event allowed Davis to keep his No. 79 at the front and finish in the runner-up position.

“I’m really happy with second considering how the day went," said Davis.  "It wasn’t a win, but we’re definitely getting there.  The Hillbilly Racing No. 79 team is definitely making our marks so far.”

Davis will head back to Bowman Gray Stadium this upcoming weekend, May 30-31, for double 100-lap Modified features.  The Dawsonville, Georgia driver hopes he and his team can continue to learn valuable information at "The Madhouse."
