Spencer Davis Turns Heads at New Smyrna’s World Series
14-Year-Old Racer Nearly Wins Three Different Titles
Spencer Davis travelled to the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway looking to gain some momentum for his 2013 season. Davis and his team not only have momentum leaving the World Series, but the 14-year-old driver was left with an even higher will to win.
After notching numerous top five runs in both Pro
and Super Late Model competition all week, Davis
entered the final night of the World Series with a
mathematical shot of winning three different titles.
The young Georgia driver started on the rear of the
Super Late Model World Series 100 and was coming
through the field when a mechanical issue ended his
title hopes of the World Series Super Late Model and
Florida Triple Crown titles.
“We had to start on the tail end of the Super race
because of the rear end broke about two feet in to
qualifying,” said Davis. “We were coming up through
the field right behind David Rogers. I was trying to
set him for a pass because I knew he was a guy I
had to beat him for the points. Right when I got by
him, the left rear tire blew, causing the drive shaft to
hit the track and snap in half. That ended our title run
right there.”
Davis also started the final 35-lap Pro Late Model race of this year’s World Series with a mathematical shot at that division’s title, but his fifth-place finish wasn’t quite enough to overtake Brandon Johnson for the title.
Although Davis left New Smyrna without a championship, he and the Spencer Davis Motorsports team gained valuable experience and developed new chemistry that will help them during a run in the Southern Super Series and major Super Late Model races throughout the country in 2013.
“We had a really, really good week,” said Davis. “We had numerous top fives, and a couple top threes and twos. We are close to a win and I feel it will come soon. We had a shot to win three titles down here, the Super, the Pro and the Triple Crown. It stinks to end like this, but it is the days like today that make me want to drive harder next time.
“It feels to run good. To mix it up with Kyle Benjamin and Stephen Nasse all week shows what we can do. It is a great way to jumpstart our season and get things rolling. It is easier to go to bed every night knowing that you are running good and fast.”
Davis was helped along by a new crew chief during the World Series. Former World Crown 300 champion Micky Cain came aboard earlier in the 2013 season and Davis has already seen a benefit to Cain’s addition.
“I grew up watching him race with and against my dad,” said Davis. “It is really cool to have him because he is a legend in our part of the world. He came with us to Auburndale earlier and we ran very well. He was with us here and we ran well. We were going to end it on a high note if not for the trouble.”
Davis will compete full time in the Southern Super Series in 2013, as well as making a handful of PASS starts and unsanctioned events.
“We are going to do some testing coming up, and see what happens,” said Davis. “We are excited about our season and where we are headed.
