Spencer Davis Rides High In The Saddle After San Antonio Win
Young Georgian Makes Most Of 2,100 Mile Trip Out West
Spencer Davis started over 20 races in the 2013 season without recording a victory. The No. 29 Part City Autoparts team nearly won a handful of events through the early months of the year, but came away empty handed until this past Saturday night.
Spencer Davis celebrates the win with family and friends in victory lane.
Davis outdueled veteran wheelman, and native Texan, Casey Smith to take the checkers in the Fiesta On Asphalt event at San Antonio Speedway Saturday night. The win for Davis was his third career Pro Late Model win.

Davis said the trip from his hometown of Dawsonville, Georgia was long, but the win made it all worth it. The team unloaded fast off the truck, and stayed near the top of the charts all weekend long.

“It’s like a 16 hour ride out there,” Davis said. “We had a really good run in qualifying on Friday, and time trialed in fifth. We were one of the fastest cars in practice all day long, as well. With two minutes to go in practice on Saturday, the guy that won the pole totaled his car, so that moved us up to third.”

Davis decided to by his time during the race, and soon found himself tucked in right behind Smith’s No. 99 machine. Lap after lap Davis studied the leader, looking for a way by and when the time came, Davis made his move.

“When the race started, we got in to second pretty quick and stayed about a car length behind Casey Smith for about 55 or 60 laps. He slipped a little coming off of turn four with about 10 or 15 laps to go, and that was my chance. We got the pass coming off of turn two, and were able to pull away from there.”

The win for Davis gives the youngster momentum and confidence heading to his next event, the Racing Radios 125 presented by Schoenfeld Headers, on Saturday. The event is the second Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco race, and the first at Davis’ home race track, Gresham Motorsports Park.

Gresham is the site of Davis’ first career Pro Late Model win, and he says that he would love to have it be the place to score his very first Super Late Model checkered flag.

“It would be really awesome to get my first Super Late Model win there at Gresham,” said Davis. “I got my first Pro win there, and it would be an even bigger honor to get the first Southern Super Series win at Gresham. We have so well this season so far. We were able to finally get a win, after driving way out there to Texas. It was near about a perfect weekend. It comes at a good time, because we are going to Gresham this weekend for the next Southern Super Series race. It feels nice to have a little confidence going in to that big race.”

For the first time seemingly all season, Davis and crew will have one of the shortest trips of any race team for the Gresham trip. The city of Dawsonville lies just 45 miles from GMP, just off Interstate 85 near Jefferson, and the team will relish the short trip, in light of the miles logged early in the 2013 campaign.

“It seems like we have been racing all over the world this year,” said Davis. “We have been to Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. It will be nice to make a local trip for once. We get to sleep in our own beds for most of the week, which is something that will be different for us.”
