Spencer Davis Returns from Florida Governor’s Cup with Top-10
Davis Also Claims Fourth in Friday’s JEGS Pro Late Model Event
As the racing season begins to wind down,
Spencer Davis has his focus on some of the
biggest events of the season.  Davis proved
he’s ready to take on the late-season, extra-
distance events by bringing home an
impressive sixth-place finish from the first of
those big shows, the JEGS Florida
Governor’s Cup, over the weekend at New
Smyrna Speedway (FL).

After starting 22nd, Davis wasn’t quite happy with his car in the beginning stages of the 200-lap event, he and his No. 29 SDM crew were able to make the adjustments they needed on pit road to lead them to a strong finish.

“At the start of the race we came up to 15th and the car was too tight,” said Davis.  “I couldn't pass well at all.  When the caution came out we went to pit road and worked on it to get it to turn.  We came back out on the track last and marched up to 13th, just a little free.  Then the 'big one' happened right in front of us and we barely missed it.  We pitted again to tighten up the car and came back out only to run a couple laps before the caution came back out before halfway.”

The second half of the event presented Davis just the opportunity he was awaiting to make his move toward the front of the field.

“Under caution we came in and got gas and saved our tires for later in the race,” said Davis.  “When everything cycled out, we were eighth and I got a good restart to drive up to third.  We had about an 18-lap run before the next caution when most people got tires, but the leader and I stayed out.

“I got a good start and stayed in third, holding off Bubba Pollard,” explained Davis.  “Around lap 150, we came in and pitted for tires and Bubba followed us in.  We beat him out and started at the rear of the field, but we worked up to sixth.  With a late-race restart, I missed a shift and fell back to 10th, but worked back to sixth by the end.”

Despite the miscue in the final laps of the event, Davis was proud of the sixth-place finish and effort by his Spencer Davis Motorsports team.

“I had a car I think I could have won with,” said Davis.  “But I made just one mistake on the restart and we pitted maybe a little too late for tires.  That all cost us, but I made the call to stay out, so this one's on me.  Still, I and the whole team are really happy with finishing sixth.”

Davis also ran Friday night’s JEGS Pro Late Model 100-lap feature where he added another top-five finish to his stat sheet by finishing fourth.

Next on Davis’ schedule is the All American 400 at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, November 2.  Davis will debut at brand new car built by veteran short track racer, chassis builder and crew chief Freddie Query.

“I'm really excited to be in a brand-new car for Nashville,” said Davis.  “Freddie Query built it and it's going to be a really stout piece.  With the success he's had there with Kyle Benjamin and everyone else he has helped, plus with my crew chief Micky Cain wrenching on it, I think we're going to be good there.  It's not every day you get a new car, so I'm really excited to try it out.  Freddie can't help us out at the track, but his cars are good and if you don't do anything stupid, you have a good chance to do well.  Plus, Nashville is one of my best tracks, so I'm excited for that too.”
