Mechanical Woes Dampen Davis’ SLM Debut in World Crown
Teenage Driver Learns Volumes at Gresham Motorsports Park
After qualifying 16th, Spencer Davis’ #29 Super Late Model experienced clutch issues that took him out of contention in the prestigious World Crown 300 on July 4th at Gresham Motorsports Park (GA), but not before he went to school with some pretty big names in short track racing like Grill, Sanders and Kelley.

“We had a good weekend and I think I caught up with the Super (Late Model) pretty fast,” said Davis.  “Augie (Grill) is the man and he helped me a lot.  I felt the weekend started off good, and I was able to out-qualify a lot of people that I didn't think I could out qualify.  We were 10th in practice, and were coming up through the field behind Paul Kelley, a four time World Crown winner, and then the caution came out.  On the restart, something didn't feel right. Then the clutch started slipping and it just burnt all the way out and we had to come in.

“Still, not bad for the first time in a Super.  I had never sat in one until yesterday.”

For his first time in a Super Late Model, Davis had Grand American Race Car’s Augie Grill and 2005 World Crown winner Ronnie Sanders in his pit to help the learning curve.

“I was a little nervous at first,” said Davis.  “But when I got out there it was ok.  It was just another race car that you have to figure out even though it has 200 more horsepower.   Augie and Ronnie both were a ton of help.  I don't think I could have done it without them; Augie with the driving and strategy experience and Ronnie with just years and years of experience that no one else can match.  I don't think I could ever have run as well as I did without them.”

Now Davis will climb back into the familiar seat of his Pro Late Model for the Viper Series Pigmy 100 at South Alabama Speedway on Saturday, July 7th.

“Our next race is this weekend at Opp,” said Davis.  “We are going to try to rebound.  I think we will have a good weekend in the Pro Late Model after running this.”
