Spencer Davis Takes Top Fives In Speedweeks Tune-Up
Georgia Driver Set for Late Model and Truck Schedule at NSS
Spencer Davis never got a fair shake in his first Pro Late Model race of 2012, SpeedFest 2012 at Watermelon Capital Speedway (GA) in late January.  Because he was wrecked in a mess on the first lap that afternoon in Cordele, Georgia, Davis and his Spencer Davis Motorsports crew put in some extra hours in the shop in Dawsonville, Georgia to get ready for more big events in the coming weeks.

With repairs made since Cordele, Davis got back behind the wheel of his CORE Race Products No. 29 Pro Late Model Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) to try his hand at the fast half-mile track in a Late Model Saturday in the Pete Orr Memorial event.  While trying for a strong finish was a goal at New Smyrna, another on Saturday was just to shake the car down for the nine-night racing extravaganza at New Smyrna that kicks off on Friday, the 46th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.  Both goals were met as Davis was able to finish fifth in the Pro Late Model event Saturday and built up even more momentum with a strong third-place run in the Truck event.

"This week was a shakedown session after Cordele," said Davis.  "We wrecked the (Pro) car on the first lap up there so we got it fixed and brought it down here to get some learning experience and we did that by racing up to fifth.  I think we did pretty good tonight."

Davis was pretty quick, but the field was started by a draw and not time trials.  He might have been able to start closer than his eighth-starting spot if they had time trials.

"We could have done better if there was qualifying," added Davis.  "We started eighth and I know we could have been quicker than that."

Davis will get a fair chance next week as the Pro Late Models will be forced to take time each night if more then 30 or so show up each night.

What else might not have been fair was Davis' trip to the back of the pack after a tangle in the Truck race.  Davis had worked his way to second before contact was made with another competitor.  Davis went back to 10th and still managed to finish third.

"Stuff happens; it's racing," said Davis.  "We went back there and came back up to finish third.  We wore the tires out getting back to the front and it was all over from there."

Davis will start his Smyrna Speedweeks efforts out with Pro Late Models starting on the opening night on Friday, February 17th.
