Spencer Davis Crowned Gresham Pro Late Model Champion
Championship Tops Off Weekend of PLM and Truck Action at Five Flags and GMP
Spencer Davis didn’t even know he was leading the Pro Late Model standings at Georgia’s Gresham Motorsports Park until last week.  This week, he was crowned the champion.

Having won half of the Pro Late Model division features on the tracks schedule, Davis went into Saturday night’s JEGS Pro Late Model 50 with a solid 23-point lead over division regular, Michael Lance.  While Davis finished second to Lance on the track, he held onto the championship trophy.

“We really weren’t racing paying attention to points,” said Davis.  “I didn’t even know we were in the lead until last week.  They only have a handful of these races so winning two of them really helped us a lot, I’m sure. It was fun to get my first Late Model win at Gresham Motorsports Park earlier this season and then end the season here with the championship too.”

Although he wasn’t able to grab his third PLM win of the year at the Jefferson, Georgia half-mile, Davis did bring home another solid top-five finish for his Parts City No. 29 team with a second-place finish.

“There was just no grip tonight,” said Davis.  “We would try to make the car stick to pass somebody and you just couldn’t do it.  You would just have to wait until somebody slips up and get up under them.  That made it a little harder for us tonight.  You couldn’t really do things as quickly as you wanted to because you had to wait for the other person to slip instead of pushing it.”

For Davis, 50 laps just weren’t enough to catch race-winner Michael Lance who started from the pole stepped out on the field in the early stages of the event.  Davis tried his luck on a late-race restart, but wasn’t able to secure the spot and Lance once again pulled away with the lead.

“I don’t know if I really could have gotten to him because he was so far out,” said Davis.  “Buven if we would have gone all green, I might have caught him, but I would have needed a little bit more to pass him.  Like I said, we just didn’t have the grip out there tonight that we needed to be able to drive it hard enough to pass like that.”

The Pro Late Model JEGS 50 capped off a weekend full of racing for Davis who finished sixth in the Allen Turner Pro Late Model division at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida on Friday night and second in the truck-division 75-lap feature at GMP on Saturday prior to his PLM run.

“We raced Ronnie’s (Sanders) son, Ricky’s car at Pensacola,” said Davis.  “We finished sixth in it unscathed and then ran the Truck race here tonight and got a strong second place.  I would have liked to have gotten a win, but we brought the cars home clean with good finishes and a championship so that’s still good for us.”

Next up for Davis will be the Pro Late Model Alabama 200 at South Alabama Speedway this Saturday night, October 20.  It will be Davis’ last scheduled event before the Pro Late Model Allen Turner Snowflake 100 and Super Late Model Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in December.
