Davis Heading to Columbus With Family-Owned Car
Spencer Davis currently sits second in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East points standings and recently just notched his first series victory. But the Dawsonville, Georgia native is now parting ways with the team he’s raced for all season long.
Davis and Ranier Racing with MDM are mutually splitting due to an unforeseen budget reason. The 16-year-old driver made it clear that he and the race team are still on good terms and could possibly reunite somewhere down the road.
Davis, the winner of the K&N East event at Virginia’s Dominion Raceway on Memorial Day, said the situation is an unfortunate one, but that’s not the worst emotion he’s feeling.
“It’s more nerve-wracking than anything because I felt like we had a really good shot at the championship with the guys that I was with,” Davis said.
The plan for the time being is for Davis to still race this Saturday night’s NAPA 150 at Ohio’s Columbus Motor Speedway in family-owned equipment. Instead of being behind the wheel of a No. 41 car, Davis will pilot a No. 92 Chevrolet that his family just recently acquired.
“It was the car that won Bristol with Nelson Piquet Jr. and we just recently got it,” he said. “It’s a one-piece fiberglass body. After this weekend we will have a new flange-fit body on it. We’re getting through this bullring race (at Columbus) and then we’ll give it some more TLC.”
The NASCAR NEXT driver said that the plan is to still attempt all the remaining races and contend for the championship. Davis is currently 22 points out of the championship lead.
“I don’t think there’s a reason why we can’t go out there and continue what we’ve been doing all year with a different team,” Davis said. “I think we can go out there and run up front in practice, qualify really well and compete for wins just like we have been. The first race at Columbus might be a little tough because we’ve never done this on our own before. But at the end of the day it’s a race car and I feel like we are more than capable of getting this deal going.”
In addition to running the remainder of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule, Davis will also continue to make starts in his family-owned Pro and Super Late Models.
